HARRISVILLE – Don Norbert O’Brien, 80, of Harrisville, passed away on Friday, October 13th, 2023, at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg where he had been a patient for a short time.
Don was born on October 25, 1942, in Watertown, New York, to the late Norbert “Bob” and Mary (Fleming) O’Brien. He graduated from Sackets Harbor Central School in 1960, then enlisted in the United States Army in 1961, where spent the majority of his active service stationed in Germany. After his active service, he continued to serve in the United States Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1967.
Don worked a variety of jobs, including driving an oil truck, working in construction, working for GE Gas Power in Schenectady, and was also employed by the New York Air Brake in Watertown. In 1974 he started his own business, O’Brien Contracting, in Carthage and actively served the local community until his retirement in 2016. Don enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending his winters down in Florida.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, his children, Hannah R. (Joe) Mono of Carthage, Quinn M. O’Brien (Jeff Grecco) of Georgia, and Sean M. (Michele) O’Brien of Copenhagen, also Mary's children; Ira (Pam) Hutton, Paul Hutton, and Michelle (Tom) Wojcikowski and eleven grandchildren who knew him as Grandpa Don.
Don is predeceased by his parents, Norbert and Mary O’Brien, and his brother, Raymond O’Brien, who passed on October 7th, 2023. He is also predeceased by his previous spouses, Penny Parish and Patricia Strife O'Brien.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 20th, 2023, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 21st, 2023, at 11 AM in the Chapel of the Funeral Home.
