CARTHAGE - Robert E. Leonard, 90, resident of the Skilled Nursing Unit, died Monday evening, January 23, 2017 at the Carthage Area Hospital.
Born in Watertown on July 27, 1926, the son of Robert A. & Vera Hartness Leonard, he attended Watertown High School. At age 17, he entered service with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II; from 1943 - 1946. He married Maxine Call in 1948; Mrs. Leonard died in 1993. He was formerly employed by the Watertown Daily Times and Reed's Dry Cleaners before working on Fort Drum as an ammunition manager. He was a lifetime member of the Watertown American Legion, Post # 61 and was honored by the American Legion with a ceremony for 70 years of membership. In the 1990's he was a dedicated member of the Pit Crew for his grandchildren's Go-Kart Racing Team and was an avid golfer and fan of the New York Yankees Baseball Team. He also enjoyed bowling; he was a member of the Watertown USBC Bowling Hall of Fame and a member of the 700 Club.
Robert is survived by his son and daughter in law, Lynn & Sally Leonard, Clayton, his grandchildren and their spouses; Erich & Diane Leonard and Scott & Tammy Leonard, as well as his great-grandchildren; Rebecca, Annabelle, Adelina and Grayson. Also surviving is his sister, Sally Boatman, Liverpool.
Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Watertown American Legion Post #61, 138 Sterling St., Watertown, NY 13601. Arrangements are being handled by the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
