HARRISVILLE - Richard L. "Big Bird" George, 72, of Thomas Road, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Richard was born on December 10, 1948 in Gouverneur, son of the late Bill & Madeline George. He graduated from Gouverneur Central School and served in the United States Air Force. He later enlisted in the United States Navy. He was then employed as a beekeeper with the former Buster's Bees in Antwerp for 41 years.
On October 16, 1983 he married Gail Conklin in Hailesboro, New York. Gail predeceased him in 2004.
Richard enjoyed fishing, bowling and watching movies. He loved traveling the area to find mom & pop diners. He volunteered with the Richville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 30 years.
Survivors include two children, Meredith Conklin George and her fianc Andrew Hendrickson of Harrisville and Bronwyn George and her partner Jeremy Tudor of Montana; five siblings, Concetta George of Alexandria Bay; Jeannette Mashaw of Antwerp; Robert George of Alexandria Bay; Paul George of Theresa; and Anne Newvine of Alexandria Bay; and one granddaughter, Gabrielle George of Harrisville. He is predeceased by his wife, Gail and two sisters, Darlene George and Barb Baltz. A graveside service will be held on the 23rd of October at 11:00am in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Richville NY; With a reception at the Richville Fire Department after the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in his memory to be made to the Richville Fire department.
