Carthage - Leon “Peanut” R. Williams, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, while at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will follow the calling hours at 5:00 pm in the Lundy Funeral Home chapel with his sister-in-law Kim Monaghan officiating.
Leon was born on February 11, 1942, in Watertown to the late Leon W. and Beatrice M. (Price) Williams. He worked as a diesel mechanic for a variety of places in the North Country, including D.L. Reed and the Carthage Central School District. He painted cars at Condino’s Motors for some time, and eventually retired from the Town of Wilna Highway Department.
He married Annette C. Monaghan on March 3, 1961. They were happily married for 64 years.
Leon loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. He had the honor of teaching them how to hunt, fish, and ride a bike, and loved to go hunting with his Carthage gang. He was an honorary member of the West Carthage Fire Department and a member of the Sons of the American Legion.
He is survived by his loving wife, Annette; his children, Laurie Crump, Rebecca Williams, Michelle (Chip) Getman, and Randy Williams; his nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a soon-to-be great-great grandchild and the many chosen grandkids and great grandkids who called him their own.
He is predeceased by his parents, Leon and Beatrice; and his siblings, Mary, who passed in 1961, and David, who passed in 1944.
To know Peanut was to love him, he was compassionate, kind and always willing to help anyone who needed it. He loved his feline fur babies and never turned a new one away. He was not a typical dad, grandpa or great-grandpa. He was the kind who would rake leaves into a pile and hide in it waiting no matter how long it took to jump out as the leaf monster and scare us, he loved it and we did too. He would spend days finding old jewelry to put in a “treasure” box, draw a map and then bury the treasure for his grandkids so they could find hidden treasure, the smile as he watched them find it said it all. He loved to hunt, but more than that he just loved being with his gang in the woods or on their yearly trip to the Southern Tier. He especially loved it when one of the kids bagged a deer. He was so excited for them and they aways made sure to go show Papa. Camping with his grandkids and his great-grandkids over the years meant they all had their special coffee and donuts waiting for them in the morning and each had their own coffee mug for this morning ritual, this was a highlight of his camping trips along with finding treasures that others didn’t see the value in. Family was everything to him, and we all knew it. When one of the kids was ill, it was special popsicles to the rescue from grandpa, because they cured everything. Memories of dad and mom dancing in the living room, still holding hands after all these years, to the much-loved green beans and Lucky Charms and his often off-colored sense of humor they will continue to bring us a smile. Dad taught us all so much, remember to enjoy your time here, love your family, celebrate and live each day like it is your last and no matter how hard life gets, keep pushing forward and never give up. We love you dad, grandpa, papa, you will be missed.
