PHILADELPHIA Katherine (Pitts) Young, 60, passed away on Tuesday evening, June 11, 2019 at the Jefferson County Hospice Residence in Watertown.
Katherine was born on January 5, 1959 in Gouverneur, New York, the daughter of Gerald Jay and Audrey (Wood) Pitts. She attended Indian River Central School and went onto receive an Associates Degree in early childhood education from Jefferson Community College. She worked various jobs over the years including housekeeping, secretarial work, truck driving, bartending and food service. She even picked grapes in Oregon for a time. She was also an electrician. Her most recent position before her illness was a Teachers Aide at Indian River Central School.
A marriage to Jesse Young ended in separation.
Katherine was a volunteer pre-school and Sunday school teacher. She was known for her drive to help others, often taking in families that were in need.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Young of Philadelphia, NY; three sons, Austin Young of Jacksonville, FL; Jacob Young of San Diego, CA; and Jared Young of Theresa, NY; her mother, Audrey Pitts of Philadelphia, NY; six siblings, Laurie Pitts of Philadelphia, NY; Louise Pitts of Evans Mills, NY; William Pitts of Florida; Ervin Pitts of Philadelphia, NY; Linda Pitts of Watertown, NY; and Rita (John) Wilm of Tennessee; as well as one grandchild, three foster grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Katherine is predeceased by her father, Gerald; a nephew, Nathan Dimon; two brothers, Frank and David Pitts as well as a sister, Karen Durocher.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on June 19, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Philadelphia with Pastor Chilton McPheeter officiating. Burial will be held in Sandy Hollows Cemetery in Philadelphia.
