Carthage- James A. Lunderman, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, June 12, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the Bassett-Baxter American Legion in Carthage.
James was born on May 12, 1939, to the late Marshall E. & Hazel E. (McCarthy) Lunderman. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1957. He served proudly in the United States Air Force from January 18, 1960, and was honorably discharged on January 19, 1966. He attended college and was an electrician, retiring from Fort Drum in 2001.
He married Velma Norris on June 15, 1961, in California.
James was a lifetime member of the Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post #789 in Carthage. A past member of the Carthage Elks Club, an honorary member of the Natural Bridge Fire Department, and a past member of the Black River Valley Fiddlers. He was a great woodworker who enjoyed working in his shop on projects. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, listening to music, and playing guitar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Velma Lunderman, Carthage; his daughter, Robbie (Douglas) Murphy, Natural Bridge; a sister, Cyrena Gerber, Natural Bridge; his grandchildren, Anthony Hanson, Natural Bridge; Jonathan (Emily) Murphy, Natural Bridge; Jamie (Joe) Martin, Antwerp; Brandee Lunderman, Texas; and Charles Lunderman, Alaska; and great-grandchild and a very special niece Shari Gerber along with many other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his son, James Lunderman Jr. who died on September 29, 1989, along with his siblings, Dusty, Burton, Neisha, Lucille, Anna, Norma, and Keitha.
