WATERTOWN -- It is with sadness that we share the passing of our mother, Helen Rose Hewitt Murray of Watertown, NY on Friday June 12, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. We celebrate her 83 years of wonderful memories and gifts given to those she met along her journey.
Born in Gouverneur, NY on August 9, 1931, she was the second youngest of 7 in the Merton and Gertrude Hagerer Hewitt family. She helped build the family farm near Copenhagen, NY and spent her career as the 4-H coordinator for Jefferson Co Coop Extn where she devoted her talents to seeing countless youth develop to their potential. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown and active on many committees. She was passionate about her beliefs and determined to see her projects through while making sure everyone had fun along the way. Her energy and passion for her family and grandchildren will always be remembered and cherished.
Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Douglas L Murray (with whom she shared the same commitments to faith, family, farming, and education) and her brothers Bernard and Donald Hewitt and her sisters Marian Mason and Gladys Reynolds.
She is survived by her brother Gerald Hewitt and wife Connie, 3 sons; David and wife Debbie of Wichita KS; Lynn and wife Peggy of Copenhagen, NY; and Roger and wife Connie of Suffield CT; her 8 grandchildren - Matt and Lisa Murray; Carly and Kurt Harryman; Mark and Sara Murray; Jenna and Ryan Waite; Bryan Murray; Greg Murray; Drew Murray, & Adam Murray; plus 9 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff and doctors at the Lewis County General Hospital Extended Care Facility for their dedicated and thoughtful care for over13 years.
Her family will receive friends Thursday, June 18th from 10 to 11:30 AM at the Copenhagen Chapel, 10229 Washington Street, followed by funeral services at 11:30 AM.
