GREAT BEND – Gary L. Tyner, 80, NYS Route 26, passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2026.

Gary was born in Watertown, NY on June 27, 1946, the son of the late Donald J. and Elizabeth A. Huntley Tyner. He attended local schools in the area, growing up surrounded by family and community. He married Clara Wisner on September 16, 1966. Gary demonstrated a strong work ethic across several careers: he was formerly employed by the New York Air Brake in Watertown, proudly served his community with the Village of Carthage Police Department, and eventually retired from Fort Drum, where he spent many years utilizing his technical skills as a dedicated helicopter mechanic.

A man of deep faith, Gary and Clara regularly attended services at the First Baptist Church in Carthage, where he enjoyed participating in Men’s Bible studies and connecting with his friends. Sharing meals with his friends and family were a source of great joy throughout his life. Gary was a man of many diverse interests and talents; as a highly skilled mechanic, he found passion in tuning engines, drag racing, and working on hot rods. He was also skilled in competition and target shooting, as well as keeping up with NASCAR racing. A dedicated fan of the New York Giants NFL team, the final game he was able to watch, was the season opener, Sunday night, where his Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys.

Gary is survived by his wife, Clara, at home, his son Danny (Jeanne) Tyner, Natural Bridge, his grandson, Matthew D. (Nicole) Tyner, Carthage and his great-granddaughter, Harper Sue Tyner. Also surviving are his sisters, Susan Storms and Donna Tyner Stewart, both of Carthage. He is predeceased by a sister, Carol and his brothers-in-law, Michael Storms and Barry Stewart.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026 at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, 511 State St., Carthage, NY, with Pastor Jon Erik Svereika, officiating. Burial will be held privately in the Hillside Cemetery, Champion, NY. Arrangements are being handled by the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., Carthage, NY.
