Carthage -Elton Hammond III, 71, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation, while surrounded by his family.

Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will take place at a later date, to be announced.

Elton was born on August 15, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Elton Hammond Jr. and Mary “Kitty” (Strong) Hammond. After graduating from Lima Senior High School in Lima, Ohio, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Elton worked much of his life as a salesman, starting in commercial real estate and later on focusing on vehicles. He ended his professional life as a truck driver, enjoying the open road and seeing the country.

As a young man, Elton and his family were members of the Lima Council of American Youth Hostels, where they enjoyed cycling, skiing, hiking, canoeing, and camping. Elton’s true passion was cycling, which could be traced back to his youth when he became a member of the bicycle racing team out of Lima Ohio, and competed throughout the Midwest and at the national level. He continued to share this passion with family and friends for the rest of his life. Elton was an avid skier and taught alpine skiing to persons with disabilities through New England Disabled Sports of NH for 10 years. He also enjoyed a good game of golf.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Hammond, Elton (Jennifer) Hammond IV, and Sean (Kara) Hammond; his grandchildren, Elton V, Willow, Nicholas, Heather, and Connor; his siblings, Malou Komornicka, Kathie Hammond, and Paschal Hammond; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lundy Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. Online condolences in his memory may be made at www.lundyfuneralhome.com
