Rutland - Doris M. Alexander, 89, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, while at Upstate Medical Center.

Calling hours will be held on May 30th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on May 30, 2025, in the Lundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Canon Samuel P. Lundy officiating.

Doris was born on May 5, 1936, in Wynona, Ohio, to the late George and Mary (Baird) Dotson. She graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Ohio. Doris worked for Samaritan Medical Center, formerly known as the House of the Good Samaritan, for 44 years until her retirement in June of 2010. She started her career in June of 1966 as a Nurse’s Aid. Through her time and dedication, she became a Certified Operating Room Technician and Certified Surgical Technician.

Doris was an avid book reader, often buying more books than she could read. She was a Civil War and Revolutionary War enthusiast. Doris loved caring for her pride and joy; a star-gazer lily tree that perfumed the air in full bloom. She was an active member of the local 1199 SEIU and also the Pontiac Oakland Club International. Doris and her husband enjoyed going to car shows and showing off their 1960 Pontiac Ventura across New York State, Connecticut, and North Carolina. Most of all, Doris loved to spend time with her cats, dogs, family, and friends.

She married Francis Alexander on December 24, 1954, in Salem, Ohio. They were together for a total of 73 years and married for 71 years. Her husband, Francis, hitchhiked many miles to see her whenever he could. One of his longest trips from Jacksonville, Florida, to Salem, Ohio, and back was 1,738 miles. He made this trip many times, along with traveling to Salem, Ohio, from South Carolina and Tennessee. They spent many years traveling down to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, and enjoyed being a part of the Atlantic Beach community.

Doris is survived by her beloved husband, Francis; her children, Lana Alexander of Watertown, Kandy (John) McGraw of Copenhagen, George (Vanessa) Alexander of Dexter, and Gordon Alexander of Tampa, FL, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, a niece, and two nephews, of Salem, OH.

She is predeceased by her parents, Mary and George Dotson; a brother, John Dotson, and an infant sister, Barbara Jean Dotson.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of the Neurological Critical Care team at Upstate Medical Center and to the staff of the PCU Unit at Samaritan Medical Center.
