West Carthage-Charles W. Spencer, 77, of 82 Bridge Street died on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at home under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County. He was born on May 13, 1938 in Watertown, New York to Vincent C. & Blanche Bartram Spencer. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1955. He served in the United State Air Force from 1955-1959, then he joined the Army National Guard where he served in the Gulf War, during Desert Storm in the Maintenance 145.
He married Joanne Arquitt on February 21, 1970 at the United Methodist Church in Carthage.
He was employed by Crown Zellerbach Corporation in Carthage for 9 years. In 1968 he started working as a Mechanic with the New York Air-Force National Guard on Fort Drum, retiring in 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne, West Carthage; three daughters, Kim , Jody, and Janeen, one-stepson, Donald and his wife Nita Rice, Watertown; one stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Darci) Cole, Wisconsin; a sister, Donna Lundquist, Florida. He is also survived by 5grandchildren and and 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars- Dionne Rumble Post #7227, Carthage; a life member of The BPOE #1762, Carthage Elks Club, past Exalted Ruler; Carthage Volunteer Fire Department & West Carthage Fire Department, A life member of the Bassett-Baxter Post #789 American Legion, Carthage Fire Department Racing Team. He loved to go hunting, snowmobiling; he enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards at the VFW and he loved playing softball he played for many different teams.
A private memorial service will be held at the Funeral Home by the Family. A celebration of life will be held at the VFW located at 668 West End Ave, Carthage, NY 13619, on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 4:00PM. Donations in his memory can be made to Hospice of Jefferson County.
Arrangements are being handled by the Scherer Funeral Home which owned and operated by Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., located at 500 State Street in Carthage.
