"Excerpts from the Watertown Daily Times"

After 58 years, signs for Scherer Funeral Home at 1 Bridge Street in West Carthage came down on Wednesday.

Cullen D. Lundy, president of the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, purchased the business and real estate earlier this month. He since moved the Scherer operations to his existing location at 500 State Street in Carthage.

Mr. Scherer said Mr. Lundy gave him the chance to bow out of the funeral home business, a move he had been contemplating for some time. Mr. Scherer, who had been approached by out-of-state funeral homes in the past, said he particularly appreciated the chance to turn his business over to a local owner.

“We’re both local people,” he said. “I decided it would be a nice transition from one firm into the other.”

Under the agreement, Mr. Lundy acquired Scherer’s caskets, funeral service equipment and furnishings, all of which will be distributed among the Bossuot-Lundy locations in Carthage, Copenhagen and Harrisville. The Bridge Street space will be renovated and rented out to a commercial enterprise, Mr. Lundy said.

As part of the sale, Mr. Scherer agreed to stay on as a manager and work with families who had been his customers, as his schedule permits. He is looking for a job in a different field and said his move away from the funeral business will give him more leisure and family time.

The funeral home was started by his father, John J., in 1933 and has been operated by the younger Mr. Scherer for the past 39 years. As a funeral director, Mr. Scherer said, he was on call all day, every day.

“We haven’t really been away on vacation in 12 years,” he said. “When I did go away, I could never really relax because when the phone rang, I’d come home.”

While he will miss the close contact he had with people, Mr. Scherer said he was pleased that Scherer Funeral Home will continue at the State Street location.

“I’m glad it’s going to continue,” he said. “I feel as though my father would be proud too.”
